Pain, tingling, numbness in the hands and feet. These are the things that you feel if you’re experiencing neuropathy. This severe nerve damage is caused by the hyperglycemia, inflammation and small blood vessels damage. Associated with diabetes.
There are a few studies on the effectiveness of supplementation for neuropathy that are showing mixed results. But nutrition is an important aspect of stabilizing our blood sugar and preventing any complications of diabetes.
3 supplements for Neuropathy
There are 3 supplements that are likely beneficial for warding off neuropathy, or at least slowing its progression. And they are Lipoic acid, acetyl l carnitine, and vitamin B12
ALA: Alpha Lipoic Acid, in several studies decrease pain for people with neuropathy and improve their nerve function
ALA is found in foods like broccoli, spinach, yeast. It’s an antioxidant which will fight oxidative stress. ALA is completely safe, but don’t use it if you have a thiamin deficiency, or heavy alcohol consumption.
Acetyl L Carnitine: a compound that is naturally found in the liver and kidneys. It diminishes oxidative stress, and may contribute to nerve cell regeneration and function. Research has shown that people with diabetic neuropathy have pain reduction, sensory problem relief, and nerve function test improvements. Don’t use this if you take heavy blood thinners.
Vitamin B12: though we can get vitamin B12 by eating fish, and lean red meats. If you pre vegatarian, or taking medications like metformin, you’re more likely to have b12 deficiency. If this is the case you’ll want to supplement with B12.
