As we get older our memory tends to decline. And for many years it’s been thought that there isn’t much you can do about it. But there’s new research that tells us otherwise. Here are a few natural strategies to improve your memory for a lifetime.
Order Fish
A Norwegian study found that older people who eat any type of fish at least once a week do appreciably better on mental tests than those who skip seafood. The jury is still out on whether it’s omega-3 fatty acids or another fish component that actually has the most brain-friendly oomph, says study author A. David Smith, PhD, a professor of pharmacology at the University of Oxford.
Eat two fish dishes weekly. If you’re not a seafood fan, experiment with mild (and low-mercury) varieties such as tilapia, scallops, or shrimp.
Exercise:
in a 2011 study published in the archives of Internal Medicine, Canadian researchers analyzed the energy expenditure and cognitive functionoing of elderly adults over teh course of 2 to 5 years. Most of the participants did not work out: their activities revolved around short walks, cooking gardening, and cleaning. Still compared with their sedentary peers, the most active participants scored better on tests of cognitive function. By the study’s end roughly 90% of themm could think and remember just as well as they could when the study began.
Scientists at Harvard Medical School suggest that drinking two cups of hot chocolate a day may help keep the brain healthy and prevent memory decline in older people. The researchers said that hot chocolate can help preserve blood flow in working areas of the brain.
The lead author, Farzaneh A. Sorond, said:
“As different areas of the brain need more energy to complete their tasks, they also need greater blood flow. This relationship, called neurovascular coupling, may play an important role in diseases such as Alzheimer’s.
Memory function tends to decrease with age, but it appears that we can simply take some natural steps to improve our memory and keep it for a lifetime. Incorporate some of these natural suggestions today.
