U.S. regulators are taking steps to check the spread of antibiotic-resistant infections from animals to humans. The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, is giving farmers three years to end their practice of using antibiotics solely to help animals grow. The European Union already has banned this use of antibiotics, but it is common in the developing world.

I believe this is some of the best news I’ve heard in a long time regarding food safety. Our food supply is full of antibiotics, pesticides, and lots of other things that are completely unnecessary for our health. The biggest issue is that over time, the antibiotics cause resistance to certain bacteria. Then, when we get sick because we’ve had a lifetime of antibiotics in our body, the bacteria have figured out how to resist. Then, when we actually might need an antibiotic, there is nothing strong enough to make a difference.
Also, these antibiotics are specifically given to these animals, not for disease prevention, but for weight gain. This practice has been going on for many years. It’s no wonder why America is the fattest nation in the world.
