Hi. I’m sure you’ve heard the silly question, the question is, “How do you eat an elephant?” And the silly answer to that is, one bite at a time.
And I ask you this question because the question isn’t necessarily a silly question. It actually has a lot of meaning here. And we’re going to talk about this because recently we were just mentioning setting goals, getting ready for the new year, setting goals that are going to be smart, specific, measurable, achievable, action oriented, time dependent, realistic. We talked about these different ways of setting goals, but sometimes we create a goal that seems so big that it’s almost impossible to be able to accomplish, but there are some things that you can do to accomplish it.
And one is exactly the way we’d eat that elephant, one bite at a time. Now, the way that we start that is by thinking about today. Today matters. Today is what’s important. What are you going to do today to achieve that goal? So when you get up in the morning and we think about that big lofty goal, forget the lofty goal, forget that I want to lose 24 pounds. Or whatever the goal is. Forget that I want to start exercising five days a week.
Remember today. What am I going to do today to be able to accomplish that goal? How am I going to exercise today to get somewhere? How am I going to eat today to move me closer to that underlying goal? How am I going to deal with my stress today to make things better?
If you think about today and not worry about the big elephant which is that lofty, amazing, major goal, then you’re going to be much more likely to be successful at achieving it.
I’m Dr. Emil Tompkins and I hope you have a great day.
