If you’re seeing a chiropractor because you have pain, you may have questions about what can you do to help ensure that you don’t continue down this path of having more and more and more pain. And there are a number of different things that you can do, but one is just making sure you’re not engaging in activities that will create more problems. And a big one is sitting posture.
If you sit for long periods of time, that puts a lot of pressure and stress on your spine and you’re going to want to change that. So we’re going to talk about how you can do that because if you’re forced to sit for a long period of time, we want to make sure that everything that we’re doing is at least leading us to have as little stress on the spine as possible. So here’s what you want to think about.
90 Degrees
When you’re sitting at a desk looking at a computer, you want to make sure that everything is at at 90 degrees. And so that means your legs are at 90 degrees. That means your arms when you’re resting on the keyboard. Working at the keyboard, your arms are going to also be at 90 degrees. And then when you’re looking at the screen, the screen needs to be directly in front of you. So the top of the screen needs to be even, or maybe an inch above the eyes. And if you can get into that position, that will take pressure off of your spinal at least have you in a normal ergonomic position so that you’re not causing more and more and more stress and strain on your back. So, um, really watch that and then try to take breaks when you’re sitting at a computer.
Take Time To Move
Even if you’re in good posture, you’re going to be putting more pressure on your spine, on your hips, on all of your joints. And so if you just take some time to get up, move around a little bit, it’ll make a difference. I don’t know, just saying get up every once in a while. Sometimes we need help with that because when we’re deeply engrossed in the activity that we’re doing, sometimes we don’t really want to stop and get up, but we need to make ourselves so set a timer for about every half an hour that it goes off and you just get up. You just move around a little bit. Maybe go to the water fountain and grab some water. Maybe stretch for just a moment.
I’m not saying take a five, 10 15 minute break, even though that doesn’t sound like a bad idea, just take a moment to move and then sit back down and it’ll make a difference in how you’re feeling. Guys, I’m dr Emil Tompkins. I hope you have a great day and I hope you follow those steps so that sitting isn’t such a pain. We’ll see you soon.
