Are youu getting ready to set a new year’s resolution? And along with that, I have a question for you. How often do you usually accomplish your resolutions? Really be honest. And I asked this question because 90% of people, 90% of new year’s resolutions fail. And in fact, about 85% of all the failed new year’s resolutions are happening within three weeks of setting these resolutions. So it’s almost like you’re destined, absolutely destined to not make it through your new year’s resolution. That’s a problem. Something has to be done about it. But you’re here. And what that means is you’re going to be different. And what I’m going to do is I’m going to give you the tools to have a healthy new year this year in 2020 we’re going to, and the only way this is going to happen is if we do something different than just making a new year’s resolution.
We have to start really thinking about setting a goal, real goals, and that will help move us in the right direction. So one of the first things that I want to do, I just want you to think about what is it that you desire. Now, a lot of times this question is what the new year’s resolution is and it’s not. This is literally the beginning of step one. It’s almost the prelude. Not even the the step one, but, but let’s just, let’s just start. What is it that you desire? Do you want to lose weight? Do you want to feel less pain? Do you want to exercise more? Do you want to improve your mental outlook? Do you want more time with the family? Do you want to read more books? I don’t know what it is, but, but first just think about what what it is that you’re looking to do.
Just get that general overview and then we’ll go into a little bit more, some really exciting things that are going to help you to be able to achieve that. Here’s why. Resolutions fail. They fail because we typically are vague. We’re not very clear as far as what our resolution really is. Also we fail because we don’t have a real plan to succeed. We also fail because we don’t create a step by step process to help us to actually achieve those goals. Each of these things is going to have to change if there’s going to be any difference in us accomplishing our new year’s resolution guys every year, my wife and I, we like to have a a day near the new year where we get away and, and if life is good, we get away for a day and for a night and we go away and we have, we have fun together.
But there’s some moment in that day where we set aside time to do some goal setting and I resist because a little bit, which is amazing that I’m teaching this goal setting seminar. But I resist because if I have this opportunity to be with my wife without the kids, there’s a lot of things besides goal setting that I’m thinking about. But it’s important and it’s important because what it does is it helps us to get focused on how we want to take care of ourselves, how we want to take care of our families, how we want to handle our health, you know, those kinds of things. And once it’s over, I’m so thankful that I’ve done it and it makes a big difference for me and how I feel about things moving forward. So what about you? How do you feel about setting goals? How do you feel about taking that step?
And no matter what you feel, here’s why it’s important that you do it. Today we’re going to be doing a lot of talking about a lot of different things. One wire’s goal setting, important to, you’re going to get some clear tips on how to do it well. Three, we’re going to learn something about something really exciting that we’re creating to help you to reach those health goals. Now the first section when it comes to setting goals to improve our health is understanding our heart goal. What is the goal or the thing that you’re working towards that brings out emotion that’s tied to some aspect of your life and the reason why I ask this, because initially when we talk about our new year’s resolutions, one of the first things that I’ll hear is maybe I want to lose weight, I want to feel better, I want to have less back pain.

I want to something that’s kind of vague in general, know your heart goal is something that you feel here, something that brings out emotions, something that’s tied to some aspect of your life. Let’s just imagine for a moment that your goal is to lose 30 pounds, let’s say, and that’s fine. There’s nothing wrong with that goal and we’ll get into how to make that goal a little bit better later. I want you to ask the question farther. So you had mentioned earlier the general area where you want to improve. Let’s just say it’s in weight. Let’s say it’s, it’s I want to lose 30 pounds. My next question is going to be why? Why do you want to lose 30 pounds? And you may think, well, that’s obvious you, I’m just going to, things are better if I lose 30 pounds, but no, really think about this.
Why do you want to do that and maybe you want to lose 30 pounds because, because it’s going to make you feel better and then the next question is why? Why is that important? I’m going to feel better because right now I’m just, I’m tired all the time. I don’t get enough done at work. And why is that important? Because maybe when I get home, I’m so exhausted because work was so tiring that I don’t have the energy to spend with my, with my spouse or I don’t have the energy that I need to wrestle around with my kids or I don’t have the, the, the, the strength to just be there for my family at the end of the day, that’s why I want to do this. Your heart goal is not something that we’re going to take lightly. Your heart goal is something that, that if you do this right, it will pull through.
When you’re tired, it’ll pull you through. When you feel like you’ve had a moment where you don’t have success, it’ll pull you through. During the times where we’re going after your goals feels monotonous. Realize that, that your heart goal is what’s going to, what’s going to help keep you going. So what is your heart goal? And I want you to write that down. I actually want you to put it in the comments because if you put it in the comments, it makes it more real. What is your heart goal this year? Hey guys, I appreciate your joining me. We’re going to be doing this quite a bit here over the next few weeks because, because my goal is to make sure that you have what you need. Do you have what you need to set up this new year in, in just the right way? And I’m just so excited about that guys. I’m dr Emil Tompkins. Have a great day and we’ll see you soon.
