A while back, a young man came into our office for treatment. As I examined him, I realized he had one of the worst looking spines I had ever seen. The curvature in his neck was so distorted, it seemed impossible that he wouldn’t have pain.
But this young man didn’t have pain. He had asthma.
His wife had recently found out that chiropractors have been known to help people with asthma and she wanted to know if we could help her husband. We examined him thoroughly and we found some specific things that would possibly be related to his breathing problems.
When the area around the lower part of the neck (at the T1 vertebrae) is misaligned, the spinal nerves that travel to the lungs can become impaired. This impairment can manifest as pain, breathing difficulties, shortness of breath, or even asthma. Correct alignment of this area, plus correct alignment of other sympathetic nerves, may improve symptoms of asthma.
I worked with this young man for about four months, and although his spinal changes at that point were small, he excitedly told me about his latest hike down the Grand Canyon — ten miles each way. Throughout the entire trip, he only used his inhaler once. That may not seem like much, but for someone struggling with asthma, reduced reliance on an inhaler can be life-changing. It sure was for him. He had later moved back to the midwest where he was from and he still sees a chiropractor and is enjoying the benefits of a healthy lifestyle free of debilitating asthma.
