Dr. Emil Tompkins busts some of the myths of exercise and resistance training.
Myth #1, I’m too old.
That is definitely a myth. It has been proven through research, that individuals as old as into their nineties have been able to increase muscle volume and increase muscle strength. So there’s no such thing as being too old to exercise. Anyone can get the benefits of exercise no matter how old you are. So jump right in.
Myth #2, I’m injured.
The truth about exercising after being injured or hurt is that in general those who exercise more have the best outcomes. So if you want better results, you’re going to want to make sure that you’re exercising.
Myth #3, I’m a woman, it’s not really for women.
I don’t want to become Arnold Schwarzenegger. Well, number one that’s really not possible. You’re not going to become that large. You need a really high amount of testosterone to be able to build really large muscles. If you’ve seen certain body builders with incredibly large muscles, then they’re probably increasing their testosterone as well, which is not something you would do. Building lean muscle is going to make you feel better, it’s going to make you look better, it’s going to help you burn fat and help you to be a healthier you. Exercise is definitely for women.
Myth # 4, Exercise intensity, I need something that’s low impact.
The truth of the matter is when you’re doing exercise that requires some resistance, that requires some heavy lifting, you have the best chance to receive the best benefits of the exercise. So lean muscle mass building, reducing fat, those things are going to happen when you do higher impact, or higher intensity types of exercise.
So there are some of the myths when it comes to exercise. Don’t believe them. You can do it. Change your mind. Accept the fact that exercise is going to make a tremendous difference in your health, and watch it happen.
