10% of American adults experience real depression and there are no shortage of suggestions on how to handle the symptoms of depression we’re dealing with. The most common are antidepressant medications. However the side effects are enough to make anyone leery of trying those. Side effects can include:
- Headache
- Nausea
- Sleep problems
- restlessness
- Sexual problems
Those happen to be the mild side effects, however some of the long term effects are appearing to be that many people relapse into deep depression even when under drug treatment. We want another answer, something natural, without side effects. Our body has been created to be healthy. Our brain currently has all the antidepressant chemicals it needs, we just need to learn how to set them free. There are some recent promising studies that show certain types of hormone imbalance can create more symptoms of depression. Researchers are finding that Vitamin D is playing a major role in numerous body functions. And it is a hormone that is chronically low. Especially here in the desert southwest (“don’t forget your sunscreen”). Although sun (our primary source of vitamin D) is plentiful here, the use of sunscreen and other items to block it out, keep us from receiving the valuable vitamin D our body needs.
Decreased vitamin D levels in the body are directly correlated to elevated chances of depression. If we can raise your vitamin D, there’s a possibility, that all by itself will improve your symptoms. Combine that with a few other healthy choices. Exercise, eating right, decreasing inflammation in the body. All can make a difference in how you are feeling.
Take a major step to improve depression. Raise your vitamin D today.
Vitamin D is a fat soluble hormone, so in order to get your body to process that hormone correctly, you must take it with fat. Dr. Tompkins recommends 2 vitamins from Standard process called Cataplex D and Cod liver oil. Cataplex D to provide the vitamin D and all the cofactors to process it as effectively as possible. And the cod liver oil, to provide more vitain D and to transport it into the cells. You’ll be hearing more about standard process in the future from our office. We are beginning to make a shift from synthetically made (although very high quality) over to whole foor, organically based vitamins, herbs and supplements. Standard process gives you the highest quality whole food supplements you can find.
