All my life, I’ve struggled with organization. Looking at my desk, you’d swear it had been hit by a tornado. I’ve spent my life telling myself that I’m just not organized. Maybe for you it’s something different. Maybe you tell yourself “I’m not good at math” or “I’m not very romantic” or “I always get headaches.”
Sometimes we just accept our bad habits, personality traits, even our health conditions as something we have to live with and suffer with forever. This type of thinking is called a “fixed” mindset — believing you are what you are and cannot change.
On the other hand, what if you saw challenges as opportunities to grow and develop? If you fail a math test, what if you actually used that “failure” as motivation to work harder, do better, and get a fantastic grade the next time around? This is a “growth” mindset, allowing you to work past your faults and improve.
Life constantly presents us with choices. When you’re diagnosed with heart disease, type 2 diabetes, or daily headaches, you have a choice. You can accept it as just a normal part of life and live with the pain and ill health. Or you can see it as an opportunity to choose a new, healthier lifestyle and watch your health grow.
You’re not stuck with allergies, back pain, ADHD, asthma or any other illness. You were born with the potential to be healthy. You may just need to change your mindset.
It has been proven that people with a fixed mindset heal more slowly — or not at all. It’s also known that those with a growth mindset are more successful in many areas of life, including their health. So open your mind. Try new things that are healthy. And by the time we’re done, I just might become more organized and you just might become healthier.
